Thiruvalluvar, whom we now refer to as Thiruvalluvar Nayannar, was a devotee of Lord Shiva and a follower of the Siddhar tradition. Thiruvalluvar was born in Mylapore, Chennai, around 1600 BCE. During British rule, it is claimed that his birth year was altered to around 2000 years ago to avoid diminishing the importance of the deity worshipped by the British. This account continues to be repeated even today. Until 1965, the name Thiruvalluvar Nayannar was considered his original name. The claim that the Thirukkural is only 2,000 years old, which has been repeated since the British period, is incorrect according to this tradition. The Thirukkural is said to be 3,626 years old, calculated as 1600 + 2026.
The famous verse sung by the poet Avvaiyar about the greatness of the Thirukkural:
"அணுவைத் துளைத்தேழ் கடலைப் புகட்டிக்
குறுகத் தரித்த குறள்"
Meaning: Just as it would be remarkable to pierce a tiny atom and contain the waters of seven seas within it, Thiruvalluvar Nayannar has condensed profound ideas and great wisdom into the very short format of just two lines in each Kural. Avvaiyar praised the extraordinary depth and concise expression of the Thirukkural through this verse.
Thiruvalluva Nayannar was born under the Anusham (Anuradha) star in the Tamil month of Vaikasi. This is considered the authentic account according to this tradition. Tamil scholars and traditional Tamil communities celebrate this day as the birth anniversary of Thiruvalluvar Nayannar.
His wife, Vasuki, is associated with a famous traditional story. While she was drawing water from a well, Thiruvalluvar Nayannar called her. It is said that she immediately stopped drawing water, leaving the bucket suspended in mid-air inside the well, and responded to her husband. This incident is traditionally cited as an example of a wife's devotion to her husband and is remembered even today.
Thiruvalluvar Nayannar is revered by some as the 64th Nayanmar. His Guru Pooja is observed on the Uttiram (Uttara Phalguni) star day in the Tamil month of Maasi. It is believed that he may have lived for approximately 6,000 years, and Agathiyar was his friend.
